Bentonite Based Waterproofing System
The Bentofix waterproofing system has been developed as a complete solution for all below-ground waterproofing of concrete structures. It compensates for imperfections in the concrete mix, such as inconsistencies due to aggregation of gravel and small cracks formed by shrinkage during curing and resulting from traffic vibrations and movement of the underlying soil. These allow penetration of the concrete structure by water, and subsequent deterioration of the concrete and reinforcement elements.
The nature of Bentofix products ensures an effective and resilient seal against water ingress and it’s self healing capability provides insurance against movement over an extended period.
The Bentofix system consists of a range of a sheet and roll products for covering horizontal and vertical surfaces, plus jointing, fixing and reinforcement elements.
Bentonite Powder
To accommodate irregular and difficult to seal areas such as around foundation piles, and to provide additional sealing around Bentofix joints where considered necessary, Bentonite Powder can be used as either in it’s dry state or pre-hydrated in a 4:1 (water to Bentonite) mix and applied as a gel. Bentonite Powder is available in 30kg bags.
Installation
The following gives illustrations of how Bentofix BFG5000 is used in a number of common tanking applications. Full details of installation techniques and procedures are available from CMS on request.
Bentofix BFG5000
Bentofix BFG5000 is a concrete sealing system which efficiently protects reinforced concrete structures, preventing penetration of water and protection to the structure from attack by any aggressive chemicals present in the surrounding soil.
The sealing technology of Bentofix consists of natural sodium bentonite as the sealing material, with robust geotextiles encapsulating and containing the Bentonite. On contact with water, the Bentonite expands by up to 18 times to form a water resistant gel. The outer layers of geotextile are linked by millions of fibre bridges that retain the bentonite gel in the correct position and prevent it from being washed out by flowing water.
Bentofix is suitable for horizontal and vertical installation and may be held vertically by nailing (to concrete or shuttering) with soft washer fixings without loss of integrity. Fully waterproof joints are achieved easily by overlapping.
Bentostrip Waterstop
This hydro-expansive joint ribbon is used to seal concrete working joints in both vertical and horizontal directions. It consists of 75% sodium Bentonite and 25% butyl rubber. The butyl rubber provides the flexibility to accommodate structural movements without affecting the seal. Upon contact with water, the Bentostrip expands more than 400% to provide a waterproof seal.
Bentostrip seals all voids or aggregation of gravel which occurs during the casting of reinforced concrete, even at considerable pressures. It’s properties are unaffected by shrinkage/hydration cycles and it remains flexible at temperatures as low as –5˚c.
Bentostrip is fixed at 30 to 40 cm intervals with steel nails with the ends of the strips butt jointed. It can be glued to uneven surfaces and where nailing would not be possible, for example, when sealing objects penetrating the concrete, such as pipes. Concrete cover of at least 75mm is required.
Bentostrip is supplied as a rectangular section, approximately 25mm by 19 mm, in rolls of 10m, four rolls per box.
